After much regret and lack of awareness, I proposed this project to statewide organization Women in Technology (WIT). During my college career, I knew nothing of the vastness of the tech world. And, yes, that is despite working at my college’s Digital and Visual Literacy Center. Out of curiosity and, possibly more, dumb luck, I stumbled upon computer science third year in college. And then, everything changed for me! I went on to found our Women in Technology chapter, and I currently lead it with an amazing executive team of 6; all as we manage 60+ students on Agnes’ campus bringing them workshops, networking opportunities, and invaluable resources.
Still, I was frustrated with the lack of 1:1 employer to student relationship at Agnes and, overall, at my club’s parent organization. After much research, I assembled this presentation and proposed it to WIT staff: a virtual career fair for all WIT campuses. The proposal made it to President & CEO Penny Collins and the project is currently scheduled for February, 2021!
What did I learn from this?
- Take initiative. It’s vital to take the first step towards something meaningful, especially if it will impact your community at large.
- Speak up. I was met with criticism about why I wanted specific segments for Black and Latino women, I came with data to support this important cause (see slides).
- Research. Always come very well-prepared and be ready to answer questions to prove your credibility.
I am passionate about Diversity and Inclusion in tech, and I’ve made it a mission of mine to serve women in tech continuously. Check out my presentation here!
